Are you looking for the perfect dining car for the legendary EuroCity 64 “Mozart” from Vienna to Paris? The ASM Arndt Spezial Modelle 24500 N WRmz EC 64 Dining Car, ÖBB, Era IV is a particularly appealing addition for model railroaders who want to recreate the history of international passenger trains in N-gauge scale. The model represents the EC 64 “Mozart” as it appeared from the mid- to late 1990s, bringing a traditional European long-distance passenger train to your layout.
For many years, the “Mozart” connected Vienna, the city of Mozart, with Paris, the city on the Seine. Its route ran from the Danube through Linz, Salzburg, Munich, Augsburg, Ulm, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, and Nancy all the way to Paris. It is precisely this international character that makes the WRmz dining car an exciting addition to long-distance passenger train formations with Austrian, German, and French connections.
The predecessor to the “Mozart” first appeared in 1954 on a different route from Salzburg, and later from Munich, to Paris. Starting in the late 1960s, the train connected Vienna with Paris, initially as an express long-distance train and, from 1989, as a EuroCity. Thus, the EC 64 “Mozart” represents an important international connection that enabled comfortable, direct travel between Austria, southern Germany, and France.
A complete train typically consisted of eleven cars. The dining car played a special role, as it catered to the passengers’ culinary needs on the long journey. In the 1970s, a DSG QuickPick car was used; later, an ÖBB dining car with service provided by è-Express took its place. The ASM 24500 captures precisely this important component of the train and adds a central car model to the EC 64 “Mozart.”
Various locomotives were used for the EC “Mozart.” The ÖBB used Class 1044 locomotives, the DB used Class 103 locomotives, and from Stuttgart to Strasbourg, Class 181 locomotives were used. In France, BB15000 or BB16500 locomotives took over the train. As a result, the dining car offers many opportunities for varied model railroad scenes and realistic locomotive changes in international long-distance service.
Through-train service added further variety. To connect Styria as well, through-cars were operated from Graz as the EC 116, which merged with the EC 64—the main train—in Salzburg. Two of these cars terminated in Munich. For several years, the SNCF also added two Corail cars from Strasbourg to Paris Est. This creates a particularly lively train theme that model railroaders can expand step by step.
The dining car is built in N scale, making it ideal for model railroading enthusiasts who want to recreate long-distance trains even in limited space. Its affiliation with the ÖBB railway company and its classification as Era IV make the model particularly suitable for layouts focused on Austrian long-distance rail service. At the same time, the EC 64’s international route offers many opportunities to use the car in cross-border train formations.
The model is designed for the 2L DC system and features a NEM-compliant coupler housing with KK kinematics. The specified minimum curve radius of 228 mm supports use on typical N-gauge layouts. Since digital and sound are listed as “no,” this is a classic car for analog or digital layout operation without its own digital or sound functions.
If you’d like to complete your EC 64 “Mozart” set or expand your N-gauge collection with a authentic ÖBB dining car from Era IV, the ASM Arndt Spezial Modelle 24500 WRmz is an excellent choice. Add this dining car to your train set and bring the international long-distance service from Vienna to Paris to life on your model railroad layout.
