Are you looking for a well-coordinated N-scale car set that will let you recreate the international EuroCity 64 “Mozart” from Vienna to Paris on your model railroad layout? The ASM Arndt Special Models 24000 N 3-Piece Set of Passenger Cars (Amz + 2xBmz) EC 64, ÖBB, Era IV is an attractive addition for model railroaders who want to recreate the high-quality passenger rail service of the mid- to late 1990s. With one Amz and two Bmz cars, this set provides a suitable foundation for a prototypical EuroCity formation in N scale.
The EC 64 “Mozart” was one of the well-known international long-distance rail services connecting Austria, Germany, and France. It linked Vienna with Paris, passing through major cities such as Linz, Salzburg, Munich, Augsburg, Ulm, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, and Nancy. It is precisely this long route that makes the train particularly appealing to model railroaders, as it offers a wide range of possibilities for cross-border train formations and the use of different locomotives.
The predecessor to the “Mozart” first appeared in 1954 on a different route from Salzburg, and later from Munich to Paris. Starting in the late 1960s, the train connected Vienna—the city of Mozart—with Paris, initially as an express train and, from 1989 onward, as a EuroCity. As such, the “Mozart” represents a time-honored and comfortable long-distance rail service that offered travelers a direct connection from Austria and southern Germany to the French capital.
A complete train consisted of eleven cars according to the schedule. The 3-car set from ASM, featuring an Amz and 2xBmz, represents an important part of this car formation and is ideal as a starter set or addition to a larger EC-64 formation. Especially in N scale, such long international passenger trains can be effectively displayed without the layout requiring an excessive amount of space.
Various locomotives were used for the EC “Mozart.” The ÖBB used Class 1044 locomotives, the DB used Class 103 locomotives, and from Stuttgart to Strasbourg, Class 181 locomotives were used. In France, BB15000 or BB16500 locomotives took over. This allows the car set to be combined in a variety of ways with matching locomotive models and used on different sections of the prototype route.
The through-service operation also made the train particularly interesting. To connect Styria, through cars were operated from Graz as the EC 116, which then merged with the EC 64 in Salzburg. Two of these cars terminated in Munich. Such operational details make the “Mozart” an exciting subject for model railroaders who not only want to run trains but also wish to create realistic train formation scenes.
The ASM 24000 set is designed in N scale and belongs to the passenger car category. Its association with the ÖBB railway company and Era IV makes it particularly suitable for model railroading enthusiasts who wish to depict Austrian long-distance rail service of the 1990s in an international context. Thanks to the 2L DC system, the NEM-compliant coupler shaft with KK kinematics, and the minimum curve radius of 228 mm, the set integrates well into compatible N-gauge layouts.
If you’d like to recreate the EC 64 “Mozart” on your model railroad or expand your ÖBB passenger train fleet with a high-quality set of three cars, this ASM model is an excellent choice. Add the Amz+2xBmz passenger cars to your N-gauge collection and bring the international long-distance service from Vienna to Paris to life on your layout.
