Prototype: The Mallet steam locomotive Tssd of the K.W.St.E.

The Mallet steam locomotives of the Tssd series were delivered by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen to the Royal Württemberg State Railways (K.W.St.E.) between 1898 and 1913. These powerful locomotives were used on the narrow-gauge railroads of Württemberg, which used a track gauge of 750 mm. The first of these lines to be opened by the K.W.St.E. was the narrow-gauge line from Nagold to Altensteig in 1891. Other important lines were the Bottwartalbahn, the Zabergäubahn and the Upper Swabian railroads in Schussenried and Biberach. The Tssd locomotives were known above all for their reliable operation on the winding and steep sections of track that were typical of the narrow-gauge network in Württemberg.

The Mallet design enabled high tractive power with a low axle load, which made them particularly suitable for use on the narrow-gauge, often mountainous lines. The locomotives shaped the image of narrow-gauge operation in Württemberg for many years and were in use until the 1960s.
