The Brawa 40994 H0 steam locomotive 01 008 is a faithful reproduction of one of the first German express locomotives and a real highlight for any H0 model railroad layout. Equipped with a built-in sound decoder and numerous digital extras, this model brings the legendary class 01 back to Era II in impressive detail.
The 01 008 was delivered to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) on January 10, 1926 as one of the first ten pre-series locomotives of the 01 series. The pre-series models were manufactured by Borsig (01 001-008) and AEG (01 009-010) and were used to test this pioneering express locomotive. Due to its axle load of 20 tons, its use was initially limited to a few lines, which delayed its development.
A striking feature of the pre-series locomotives was the longer driver's cab, which was visually very different from the later series locomotives. There were also specific design differences in the frame and other components. The BR 01 was later to become the "Queen of express locomotives" and was to be used on all the main lines in Germany.
The locomotive consists of finely detailed plastic components on the boiler, driver's cab and tender, while the openwork ingot frames and spoked wheels are made of die-cast zinc. This gives the locomotive impressive stability and attention to detail. The filigree metal driving and coupling rods as well as the individually attached steps and treads underline the high quality of workmanship of this model.
The model has maintenance-free LEDs that provide a prototypical light change with a two-light headlights signal. The interior lighting in the driver's cab provides additional realism, especially when driving in the dark. Thanks to the PluX22 interface and the built-in sound decoder from Döhler & Haass, the locomotive is ideally equipped for digital layouts. The digital highlights include flickering fire and engine lighting, which perfectly reproduce the atmosphere of a real steam locomotive.
The integrated sound decoder offers a realistic acoustic experience that includes typical steam locomotive sounds such as the hissing of steam, horns and driving noises. The precisely tuned 16-bit sound technology ensures impressive sound characteristics. The locomotive is compatible with all common digital systems and is easy to control.
The model is designed for a minimum radius of 360 mm, although a radius of 420 mm is recommended for optimum driving characteristics. Four traction tires ensure a stable grip, even with heavy express trains. The built-in flywheel mass ensures smooth and realistic starting and braking. The Seuthe No. 20 smoke generator can be retrofitted to round out the steam experience.
