In April 2011, a framework agreement was signed between Deutsche Bahn AG and Bombardier Transportation for the delivery of up to 200 new TRAXX P160 DE ME locomotives. The locomotives, a replacement for the class 245, are to replace the ageing class 218 large diesel locomotives. The diesel-electric locomotives have four diesel engines (ME - Multi Engine), which drive four generators to produce electricity, which in turn feed the traction motors via the power converters. The diesel engines switch on and off automatically depending on the locomotive's power requirements. This serves to reduce the idle times of the engines, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. This engine type therefore fits perfectly into DB AG's new ecological and sustainable environmental concept. As it comes from the TRAXX product family, around 70% of all components used are compatible with existing TRAXX locomotives. The Class 245 is assembled and designed at the former Henschel & Sohn plant in Kassel, which now belongs to Bombardier. Large components such as locomotive bodies and bogies will be supplied from the Wroclaw and Siegen plants, among others. The first batch of 20 locomotives for DB Regio was called off as soon as the contract was signed. The new 245 003-9 locomotive series was officially presented at InnoTrans 2012. The first 245s will be based at DB Regio in Kempten and Frankfurt a. M. and have already successfully completed their first test runs.
