Thanks to new, stricter safety requirements, Bombardier was forced to increase the crash safety of the TRAXX 1 locomotive body. The TRAXX 2 locomotives built since 2005 therefore have a vertical front section at the bottom and modified shunting steps at the front. Many components inside the vehicle have also been simplified and standardized in order to be able to react more flexibly to customer requirements and at the same time reduce production costs. For example, the time required for the final assembly of a Traxx locomotive was reduced to less than two weeks. In order to be able to distinguish them by their operating numbers, the locomotives are designated by DB AG with the sub-series 185.2 and 146.2 to 146.5. Bombardier has now produced over 1,500 locomotives of the highly successful TRAXX product family worldwide.
