About the prototype: From the end of the 1990s, DB AG procured numerous new vehicles for use in regional transportation, most of which were designed as railcars. From 1999 to 2008, the Siemens / Adtranz / Bombardier / DWA consortium also procured 249 units of a four-car electric multiple unit, which was designated the BR 425. An identical two-car variant for less frequented routes was created as the BR 426. The car bodies are made of extruded aluminum profiles and the windows are glued flush.
