The Brawa AB4 compartment car of the Royal Prussian Railway Administration (K.P.E.V.) embodies a classic design from the early days of passenger rail travel in Germany. With its four-axle body, distinctive brakeman’s cab, and lovingly reproduced details, this H0 model brings authentic Era I flair to your layout—ideal for express and rapid trains of the Imperial era.
The early compartment cars used for passenger transport were originally derived from stagecoach bodies: several stagecoach bodies were placed one behind the other on a railroad undercarriage. This design—with compartment doors that opened directly to the outside—allowed for quick passenger boarding and alighting. The Prussian State Railways, in particular, increasingly deployed four-axle cars in express train service starting in the 1890s. Beginning in 1900, numerous cars based on the D.1.21 through D.I.23 design specifications followed, shaping the landscape of passenger transport.
Compartment cars dominated passenger service well past World War I, and in some cases even until after World War II. Their robust, practical design and the ability to combine multiple classes within a single car made these cars popular for many years. The AB4 combined second-class comfort with a practical layout and was in service on numerous mainline and branch-line trains.
The Brawa model impresses with finely engraved bogies, numerous separately attached handrails and vents, as well as high-quality printing and paintwork. The interior is pre-installed, and the car is prepared for optional interior lighting—ideal for atmospheric day and night operating scenarios. The close-coupling mechanism allows for safe operation even on tight curves.
