To replace regional trains and make branch lines more attractive, Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) introduced the new City-Bahn train type at the timetable change on September 30, 1984. Under the slogan "City-Bahn - without traffic jams at hourly intervals", a frequent timetable was introduced and the existing n-cars were modernized for this purpose. The Cologne-Overath-Gummersbach-Meinerzhagen route, which was threatened with closure, was the first connection to be served in this way. The 25 n-cars, seven of which were driving trailers, were given a modern interior and a pure orange/pebble gray livery, similar to that of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr. A café was added to the sets.
