In the summer timetable of 1956, the Dortmund Hbf depot used a total of three six-car reversible train sets, consisting of a Bif (command car), an ABib and four Bib cars of the standard car types, which were pulled or pushed by a class 78 locomotive of the Dortmund Bbf depot, depending on the direction of travel. These push-pull trains ran several times a day from Dortmund main station to Hagen, Witten, Herne, Wanne-Eickel and Gelsenkirchen in the forerunner of S-Bahn services. The three schedules started between 4 and 5 a.m. and ended shortly before midnight in some cases. With turnaround times at the destination stations of often around 10 minutes, the advantages of the push-pull trains were fully exploited in terms of timetabling.
