Brawa 48805 2er Set Kohletrichterwagen Otw, DRG, Ep.II Product Details

Description

About the model: The set of 2 DRG coal hopper cars Otw for Era II is a BRAWA product. Both cars impress with a prototypical brown paint scheme and the finest lettering. Each car has been given a road number. In addition to visual details, the model also shines with features such as close coupling kinematics and a body made of die-cast zinc.

About the prototype: With the onset of the industrial revolution, more and more steel industry plants were quickly established in Saarland. The deposits of hard coal and the Lorraine ore mined nearby made production appear interesting in many places. From 1883, the Prussian state railroad procured special coal hopper wagons especially to supply these smelters and steelworks. On an underframe with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm sat a funnel-shaped superstructure, which could be unloaded abruptly through a flap on the left and right, as well as through floor flaps above a deep bunker. With a loading space of 13.2 m3, the wagons had a loading weight of 10 tons. As the design proved itself in its special field of application, the construction was revised and a reinforced design was procured from 1897. The wagons built according to model sheet IIc12 had a larger loading space with a capacity of 15.3 m3 and could now carry 12.5 tons. By 1905, 230 of these larger wagons had been built. As with the predecessor design, there were only unbraked wagons and wagons with hand brakes. The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all the wagons and assigned them to the "Mainz" class as Otr(u), and continued to use them exclusively in the Saarland. Today there is little to be found of this industrial glory. A producing steelworks on the Saar is still located in Dillingen. The Völklingen Ironworks was completely preserved after its closure and is now a unique museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to cultural events of all kinds, you can find impressive information about steel production and its history here. The exhibits also include several railroad vehicles from different eras, which are displayed in their historical surroundings.
