As an example: Collective bargaining agreements on the one hand and technical requirements on the other led all state railway administrations to develop covered freight cars with nearly identical dimensions and load capacities. These were cars with a 4.5-meter wheelbase, a length over buffers of 9.3 meters for unbraked cars, a load capacity of 15 metric tons (later 17.5 metric tons), and a floor area of approximately 21 square meters. This freight car design became the most important and most widely produced covered freight car of all; they originally bore the class designation Gm. The most widespread of these regional railway cars was the one based on the Prussian model sheet IId8, of which 47,533 were built. Following the founding of the German State Railways Car Association (DWV) in 1909, this design evolved into the association car type A2. Starting in 1911, a staggering total of 121,770 units of this type were built. This made it the most widely produced covered freight car in the world. It dominated the landscape of German freight trains well into the early Era 3. As a result of two world wars, these cars were scattered throughout Europe; there was no European railway administration that did not use such cars, at least temporarily.
About the model: This prototypical model of the DR’s Gklm “Tetraethyl Lead” covered freight car is from Era IV and features individually attached axle box covers and a multi-part braking system with brake shoes at wheel level. You can find all additional information under “Features.”
