Description

About the model: The DR covered freight car Gbs "Schierker Feuerstein" is an H0 model from the BRAWA brand and comes from Era IV. The wagon shines with a prototypical look and numerous features that make this model a real highlight. Among other things, the model was equipped with a multi-part brake system with brake shoes at wheel level and individually mounted bearing caps.

About the prototype: Freight cars were and are always needed on the railroad. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) was able to provide a short-term remedy in the 1950s through conversions and modernization, but in the long term it was clear that other solutions were needed. The RAW "Einheit" Leipzig therefore designed a Glmms wagon in 1965 that essentially corresponded to the standardization features according to the UIC leaflet. The knowledge gained from a test wagon was incorporated into the series wagons produced from 1968 onwards, which were now designated Glmms 14.05 (later Gbs 1500). The body, with its distinctive corrugated side walls, was built entirely as a welded construction. The side walls are pulled down to the lower edge of the outer frame longitudinal members and the box profiles are welded to them. This made it possible to simplify the side box supports. To prevent damage to the sheet metal walls during loading, the wagons were lined with wood on the inside. The floor was made of standard pine planks and was suitable for loading with forklift trucks. Based on the Gbs 1500 design, which was built in over 17,00 units, various other variants were subsequently produced, such as heat protection wagons, express goods wagons and crew wagons. As the production capacity of the company's own factories reached its limits, wagons were also produced in neighboring countries and even Spain. Due to their suitability for RIV, MC and OPW traffic, the wagons could be used relatively freely beyond the borders of the GDR and were therefore frequently seen in Bundesbahn trains even before the fall of the Berlin Wall. By the time DB AG was founded, around 7,000 cars were still in use.
