Brawa 50056 H0 Offener Güterwagen Omm 53, DB, Ep.III Product Details

Description

About the Model: The DB Omm53 open freight car in 1:87 scale is a prototypical model from Brawa. This model features numerous added details and has profiled wheels on both sides for a realistic appearance. The car floor is made of sturdy metal, ensuring high stability.

About the prototype: To promote the renewal of the railcar fleets and the standardization of freight cars for European national railways, the UIC (Union Internationale de Chemins de Fer) designed two variants of an open freight car in the early 1950s. The UIC Type I and UIC Type II. The UIC Type II, with its dimensions of 10.0 m in length and a 5.4 m wheelbase, was very closely modeled after pre-war German designs. The entire frame and car body were constructed entirely of welded parts. Once the detailed design was complete, the Deutsche Bundesbahn began planning the renewal of its O-class fleet at the Kaiserslautern maintenance depot based on the UIC Type II. Within two years, starting in 1954, 10,589 Omm54-type cars were built in Kaiserslautern. Even though these were officially classified as conversions using salvageable parts from older cars, almost exclusively new materials were used for the cars. Only for the brake components did they rely on Kkg brakes from the donor cars. In the subsequent production batches, designated as Omm55, even this practice was discontinued, and new KE brakes were installed. The DB procured another 17,300 of these starting in 1955. Thanks to numerous detailed improvements made during ongoing production and subsequent design modifications, the cars were maintained throughout their lifecycle and were not completely phased out until 1994. In addition to the Deutsche Bundesbahn, other national railways also acquired cars for their fleets in accordance with UIC Type II specifications. For example, they were put into service by the DR Ost, SNCF, SNCB, FS, MAV, ÖBB, SBB, CSD, DSB, etc., some of which differed in details or components typical of their respective countries.
