The model for this wagon goes back to the international standardization of freight wagon construction. The International Union of Railways, the Union internationale des chemins de fer, founded its own research and development institute, the ORE, in 1949, thus creating the basis for internationally valid construction principles for freight wagons. The European railroad administrations soon developed their own vehicles on the basis of the ORE's designs and principles for a standard two-axle freight wagon. Other railroad administrations such as SNCF, FS, ÖBB, NS, DSB, MAV, P.K.P., CFL and SBB took a similar approach and produced their own versions of the UIC standard wagons. As a result, the wagons were very similar in their basic design, but always showed country-specific design differences.
As DB itself had a great need for new wagons and at the same time there was a modernization backlog for older wagon types, it did not stop at the complete new construction of UIC-St wagons. The wagon types Gmms 44, Gmm(eh)s 60, Gmms 40 and 216 were gradually created in several conversion programs in which individual parts of older wagons were reused. These wagon types were characteristic of freight transport in Europe from the 1960s to the 1990s and, with over 100,000 units built, were included in almost every freight train. It is precisely this historical classification that makes the model particularly interesting, as it represents a type of wagon that was a familiar sight on the rails for a long time.
The model is designed in H0 gauge and assigned to Era IV. With the DB railroad company and the road number 01 80 120 5 985-5, the car has a clearly defined design. The length over buffers of 121.6 mm ensures harmonious integration into mixed freight trains and emphasizes the harmonious overall impression in layout operation. This model is particularly convincing in train formations with several covered freight wagons.
