Following the founding of the Research and Development Institute of the International Union of Railways (UIC) in 1949, international standards for freight wagons were developed. The Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) implemented these UIC guidelines with the Gs 1200 covered freight wagon, a model that went into series production from 1957 and is considered one of the first genuine UIC standard wagons. This wagon type was not only known for its robust construction and versatility, but also for its adaptability within Europe, as other railroad administrations such as the SNCF, FS and ÖBB produced similar models according to their national requirements.
The Gs 1200 was distinguished by its characteristic country-specific design differences and was further optimized through numerous conversion programmes and modernizations in the following decades. With over 100,000 units built, this wagon shaped European freight traffic for over four decades and was an integral part of everyday railroad life.
