The Brawa 50155 H0 German Federal Railroad Era III Grs 60 Gmmhs boxcar is based on the international design principles of the International Union of Railroads (UIC), which founded the ORE Research and Development Institute in 1949. This established the designs for standard two-axle freight wagons, which were adopted by European railroad administrations. The Deutsche Bundesbahn started with around 3,500 wagons based on the preliminary designs and introduced the first 2,662 genuine UIC standard wagons from 1957 with the Gmm(e)hs 56, recognizable by the inscription RIV St UIC.
Other railroad administrations such as SNCF, FS, ÖBB and SBB followed with their own versions. Due to the high demand for new wagons and a modernization backlog for older wagon types, the Deutsche Bundesbahn carried out several conversion programmes, resulting in the Gmms 44, Gmm(eh)s 60, Gmms 40 and 216 types. These wagons characterized European freight traffic from the 1960s to the 1990s and were widely used with over 100,000 units built.
