Brawa 50752 H0 Tank Car Z P, CSD, Ep. III Product Details

Description

About the Model: The CSD R 2-axle tank car is a 1:87 scale model from Brawa. The model features precise printing and paintwork, as well as numerous details that lend it an authentic look. The multi-part braking system, freestanding ladders, and separately attached handrails give this model an authentic look.

About the Prototype: In the mid-1930s, rapid advances in lightweight construction led to successive new generations of railcars. The introduction of welded tanks allowed for weight savings that benefited increased load capacity. As a result, starting in the late 1930s, the wheelbase of the classic two-axle tank car design was increased from 4.00 m to 4.50 m. The running gear corresponded to the design developed at the same time for the welded DR cars and was notable for its long leaf springs, which ensured a smooth ride even at higher speeds. The resulting design was built in very large numbers by many European railcar factories until 1943—MAN alone, despite not being a traditional tank car manufacturer, delivered 2,250 units. In addition to a few private operators, deliveries were primarily made to the German Reich’s front companies as part of war preparations. These included “Wifo” and various “oil associations.” The operator was more clearly identified as the “Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven”; these cars were used to supply fuel to the submarine fleet. In total, well over 10,000 of these cars—with tank capacities of 20 m³, 22 m³, and 26.5 m³—are believed to have been built. After the war, they were scattered throughout Europe and thus ended up as privately owned cars for numerous companies in the petroleum industry. In addition to the classic gray and black paint schemes, many also featured eye-catching advertising liveries ranging from white and yellow (Mobil / Shell) to green and blue (Texaco / Aral). The last of these cars were still in service with the DR as late as 1989.
