Brawa 50818 Speisewagen WRge, DR, Ep.IV Product Details

Description

About the model: The DR's WRge dining car is distinguished above all by its detailed paint scheme with the finest printing. It was manufactured with a great deal of attention to detail, which can be seen, among other things, in the multicolored painted interior as well as the full-scale windows. The car has a length of 214.4 mm and was prepared for interior lighting. All this rounds off the overall appearance of the car and makes it a nice addition to your layout.

About the prototype: In the early 1970s, the gastronomic supply in the DR's inland express trains was to be improved. In addition, many of the pre-war dining cars still in use were due for retirement. The DR therefore looked into the procurement of new dining cars. For capacity reasons, delivery by the GDR's wagon construction department was out of the question, so the only alternative was production in DR-Raw. Although the Mitropa plant in Gotha had already built six cars from older vehicles as "Reko cars" in 1960, it was decided to build a new design based on the Bghw cars manufactured in Halberstadt. In the meantime, these were built from scratch and no longer contained any old parts. In two series, a total of 50 of the cars designated as WRge were built in 1973 (20) and 1977 (30). They were painted in Mitropa's typical wine-red livery with four-language inscriptions, but without the previously used decorative lines. Both series differed externally only by two windows in the kitchen wing, which were intended to improve the lighting conditions in the second series. With a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a multi-voltage heating system, the cars were internationally usable and thus also reached destinations in the FRG and CSSR. After most of the cars had been rebuilt, just five original dining cars in red livery were still in service in 1989. Although the dining cars were still to receive the new design number 541, they were completely retired by 1993. Due to their short length and rugged interior, many found new homes on museum railroads.
