In order to make the capital city of Berlin easily accessible from larger cities on a daily basis, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) introduced a city express service at the end of the 1960s. These through train-like connections had fewer stops than regular D trains and therefore shorter travel times. The D 1050 was a city express train that was originally known as the D 150. It connected cities such as Meiningen via Suhl, Erfurt, Weimar and Halle with Berlin-Schöneweide. In the evening, the return train D 1057 made the return journey to Meiningen possible. In Erfurt, the locomotive was switched from V to E traction. The urban express service was discontinued in May 1989 and the last connections were integrated into the normal DR service.
The Brawa train set D 1050 is equipped with the class 211 diesel locomotive and includes a passenger train that fits perfectly into Era IV of the DR. The model impresses with its high level of detail and numerous technical features that make operation on the model railway layout realistic.
