The Höllentalbahn (from Freiburg main station via Neustadt/Schwarzwald to Donaueschingen) is one of the most impressive railroad lines in Germany for good reason, thanks to its breathtaking route through the narrow Höllental valley with gradients of up to 57.14 per thousand. Today, it is rightly registered as a cultural monument of spatial significance in the Southern Upper Rhine region. The line was electrified as early as 1933 with a voltage of 20kV at a frequency of 50Hz. At the same time, the rolling stock was renewed with the BR 85 and E 244 locomotives and Ci-33 and BCi-34 light branch line carriages. It was not until May 1960 that the voltage was switched to the now standard 15kV at 16²/3 Hz. This meant that the E 244s were replaced from one day to the next by E44w from Freiburg depot. They took over the electric traction on the Höllentalbahn and the transportation of the passenger trains typical for this route from various standard branch line cars.
