The BRAWA 50918 H0 BTs30 Container Car featuring the well-known “Langnese Eiskrem” container is a real highlight for model railroaders who want to realistically recreate the historic freight transport of Era III. This car is a perfect example of the innovative transport solution developed by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), which used standardized containers to create an efficient logistics system for various types of cargo, such as food and frozen goods. With its three mounted containers and numerous fine details, this model is sure to be an eye-catcher on any layout.
Even before World War II, Germany began using standardized large containers for combined rail-and-road transport. However, the war years halted further development. After the war, the Deutsche Bundesbahn revived the system and began introducing it on a large scale starting in 1949. While the containers were newly built, the underframes of decommissioned pre-war cars, such as the Omm 34—which were available in large numbers with war damage—were used for the carrier cars.
The cars converted in this way were designated BTs30 and were used to transport a wide variety of cargo. There were open and closed containers, as well as special containers for liquids, beer, and frozen foods such as ice cream. However, with the introduction of container technology in the 1960s, the importance of the pa container system gradually declined. Transport using container cars such as the BTs30 finally came to an end in the late 1990s.
The renowned model railroad manufacturer BRAWA stands for the highest quality and highly detailed replicas of historic vehicles. The H0 BTs30 container car impresses with its intricate design and numerous added details. From the openwork frame to the fine handrails and footrests, this model offers an exact replica of the original.
The model has a length over buffers (LOB) of 115 mm and is designed for the H0 scale (1:87). It is designed for the 2-wire direct current (DC) system and is equipped with a built-in close-coupling mechanism, which ensures a secure and flexible connection with other cars. The minimum operating radius is 360 mm, making the car ideal even for smaller layouts. An AC wheel set swap is possible, allowing the model to be used flexibly on AC layouts.
The car impresses with its faithful-to-the-original features, including the brake shoes at wheel level, the separately attached axle brake linkage, and the openwork car body supports. The metal axle holders and the profiled wheel sets contribute to the high level of detail. The car features a transfer platform or handbrake platform, which could vary depending on the original’s intended use.
Particularly striking are the three mounted Ekrt212-type refrigerated containers bearing the inscription “Langnese Ice Cream.” These not only ensure a realistic depiction of historical refrigerated transport but also make the car a real eye-catcher on the layout. The fine printing and true-to-original color scheme underscore its authentic appearance.
The car features a bogie with a three-point mounting system, which ensures excellent running characteristics. Even in long train sets, the car remains stable and reliable. The delicate, individually attached components—such as the brake system, handrails, and steps—are robustly constructed to ensure durability even during intensive operation on the layout.
Era III (1945–1970) marks the reconstruction and modernization phase of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. During this period, many pre-war vehicles were modernized or converted to meet the growing demands of freight transport. The BTs30 container car with Langnese ice cream containers is a typical example of this flexibility and integrates perfectly into historical freight trains of Era III.
The BRAWA 50918 H0 BTs30 Container Car is the ideal addition for all model railroading enthusiasts who want to authentically recreate historic freight transport. The combination of a finely detailed car and the eye-catching Langnese refrigerated containers makes this model a real showstopper. Whether in a mixed freight train or as part of a specialized refrigerated transport consist—this car is an absolute must-have for Era III enthusiasts.
