The Brawa 51012 H0 ÖBB Shimmns telescopic hood car from Era V is a fascinating model that traces the evolution of freight transportation in the 1970s. Due to the rolling process during production, coiled sheet steel rolls (coils) are particularly sensitive to moisture. In order to be able to transport these coils to the processing industry without corrosion damage, the vehicle industry developed a special flat wagon with three interlocking hoods. This wagon, originally known as Shis 708 and designated Shimmns 708 from 1987, enabled easy loading of the five loading recesses in the vehicle frame thanks to the sliding hoods.
The Deutsche Bundesbahn ordered over 2,500 of these wagons in two large batches. Due to further orders from other state railroads and rental companies, the actual number of these vehicles is even higher. With increasing age, the hoods became more maintenance-intensive, so from 2002 DB AG replaced the hoods on 1,000 wagons with sliding tarpaulins and re-designated these vehicles as Shimmns-ttu 772. Nevertheless, private operators continue to use wagons in their original condition, which underlines the longevity and versatility of this design.
