Description

Brawa 51019 – H0 Telescopic-Top Freight Car Shimms 385, NS, Era V

With the Brawa 51019 Shimms 385, Brawa brings a highly detailed model of a telescopic-hooded car from the Dutch National Railways (NS) to the H0 model railroad layout. The car is representative of specialized coil transport in Era V and combines modern technology with classic design. With its characteristic shape featuring three telescopic hoods—which, in the original, can be nested inside one another—the car represents an important link in European freight transport.

Realistic design with many variations

The model impresses with its highly detailed reproduction, numerous separately attached components, and the prototypical arrangement of the nameplates. Even though the hoods on the model are not movable, their construction has been precisely replicated. Different designs—such as variants with or without hand brakes or parking brakes, and various bogie types—have been taken into account, creating an authentic overall look for any Era V layout.

Safe Operation Thanks to Sophisticated Technology

The integrated three-point suspension ensures smooth and stable running, even over longer distances or on complex track layouts. With a length over buffers of 138.40 mm, close-coupling kinematics, and a minimum radius of 360 mm, the model integrates perfectly into modern train formations. The road number 31 88 437 3137-9 is clearly printed and corresponds to the NS prototype.

A European freight car of industrial significance

The car is based on the Shis 708 type, later Shimmns 708, as developed in the 1970s for weather-protected coil transport. Over 2,500 units were ordered by the Deutsche Bundesbahn alone, with many more added through state railways and leasing companies such as the NS. While many cars were later converted to the Shimmns-ttu 772, original versions remain in service to this day—including under Dutch administration.

A must-have for international model railroad scenes

The Brawa 51019 Shimms 385 combines modern industrial history with prototypical model building. It’s a highlight for anyone looking to enrich their Era V layout with international flair and technical details—a classic of modern heavy-haul transport in H0.
