An Exciting Prototype from the Development of Lightweight Construction

The prototype for this car dates back to a time when technical advances in lightweight construction and welding technology opened up new possibilities in freight car manufacturing. During the design of new tank cars, the idea arose to dispense with the actual vehicle frame and instead have the tank itself absorb tensile and impact forces as much as possible. Through the extensive use of welding technology, the goal was to reduce raw material requirements and manufacturing costs while simultaneously creating more robust vehicles. In 1938, the Uerdingen Car Factory received a contract to develop a lightweight tank car with a loading volume of 30 m³. As early as 1939, three prototypes were handed over to two private freight car leasing companies and to the state-run Economic Research Society for testing. Following a small pilot production run in 1940, series production of the 30 m³ Uerdingen-type lightweight tank cars finally began in 1941. A total of approximately 3,700 cars were built. The largest customer was the Luftwaffe, with about 2,200 units, followed by Wifo and numerous smaller companies.

Widespread Use Over Many Years

Even after the war, this car type remained of great importance. In the postwar period, the cars belonging to Wifo and the Luftwaffe were distributed among other car owners in both German states. Larger companies in the petroleum industry in particular, but also smaller private firms as well as DB and DR themselves, used the cars in the decades that followed. Some of the cars also remained abroad and continued to be used there by new owners. It is particularly noteworthy that as recently as 2016, one such car was still in use for internal plant traffic at Haltermann in Hamburg. This impressively underscores the longevity and significance of this design.
