Are you looking for a rare low-loader with an international theme for your Era III layout? The Brawa 51198 Ld low-bed freight car from the Dutch State Railways (NS) brings a special vehicle to your model railroad—technically well-designed, strikingly styled, and perfect for transporting small, heavy cargo.
The car has a length over buffers of 140 mm and is equipped with NEM-compliant close-coupling mechanism. The typical curved long-girder shape of this design has been precisely reproduced in the model. The Dutch color scheme and the road number 90 101 make it an eye-catcher in international train sets.
Between 1957 and 1966, Friedrich Krupp Maschinenfabriken AG built a total of 15 of these compact low-bed cars for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Five identical cars were delivered to the Dutch NS starting in 1962. The cars were designed for transporting small but heavy cargo and could carry a payload of up to 21 metric tons with a curb weight of about 15 metric tons. Due to the compact frame design, an air brake was not installed—instead, a wheel set was secured using a hand brake.
The cars used by the NS were primarily employed in factory and industrial transport, but also appeared in cross-border traffic with Germany. Their low height and load-carrying capacity made them ideal for transporting machinery, castings, or other heavy loads.
Whether as a single car or in combination with open and covered cars—the NS Ld fits perfectly into transfer trains, industrial connections, and factory traffic. Particularly well-suited when paired with Dutch, Belgian, or German locomotives from the 1950s and 1960s.
The Brawa 51198 Ld low-bed car is a special model for anyone who loves the extraordinary: compact, technically appealing, and with an international flair—ideal for small layouts or sophisticated freight transport displays.
