Are you looking for an exceptional low-bed car with an international operational background for your Era IV layout? The Brawa 51199 Ui-type low-bed freight car from the Dutch State Railways (NS) is based on the rare Krupp St 309a design—ideal for short, heavy cargo with special space requirements.
With a length over buffers of 140 mm and NEM-compliant close-coupling kinematics, the car is fully operational and, at the same time, a visual highlight in any train formation. The characteristic curved longitudinal girder is elegantly rendered, making the car instantly recognizable. Road number: 21 84 909 1 000-8.
Between 1957 and 1966, Friedrich Krupp Maschinenfabriken AG manufactured a total of 15 of these flatbed cars for the DB—five of which were delivered to the Dutch State Railways (NS) starting in 1962. They were designed for compact but heavy loads, such as machine parts, containers, or industrial components. The absence of air brakes meant that only one wheel set was secured by a handbrake—a distinctive feature of this design.
With their robust yet space-saving design, these cars could be used throughout Europe and were also a regular sight in cross-border traffic. In Germany, this type of car remained in service until 2004—and presumably for a similar length of time in the Netherlands.
The Ui low-bed car is ideal for scenes featuring industrial connections, factory traffic, or special transports. Especially when paired with NS or DB locomotives, the car serves as a striking accent in any freight train.
The Brawa 51199 brings a rare, technically interesting vehicle type to the model railroad—neatly executed, visually striking, and highly appealing to collectors.
