The Brawa SSt125 "RWE" heavy goods wagon is an impressive highlight on any H0 model railroad layout. Its detailed reproduction, robust construction and versatile applications make it the ideal addition for demanding model railroaders. Developed for exceptional transportation, this model is the perfect replica of one of the most important heavy goods vehicles of the post-war period.
In 1928, Rheinisch Westfälische Elektrizitätswerk A.-G. (RWE) commissioned Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nürnberg (MAN) with the construction of two Schnabel wagons. The constantly growing number of transformers required special means of transportation to transport them safely to the substations. The maximum payload was an impressive 168 tons, spread over 18 axles.
The characteristic riveted trussed carrying beaks were a key feature of these wagons. When unloaded, the carrying beak wagon reached a length of 27.5 meters over buffers and a tare weight of 97.2 tons. For transportation, the two carrying beaks were pulled apart and the transformer was attached between them. The wagons could be loaded with both self-supporting transformers and lattice support frames.
After the Second World War, the carrying beak wagons became part of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) wagon fleet. Due to the unusual dimensions of the freight being transported, these wagons were only allowed to run loaded as "exceptional transports" at a maximum speed of 40 km/h. On narrow bridges and special sections of track, the speed was reduced further to ensure safety.
Unloaded, the heavy goods wagon reached a speed of 65 km/h, which was increased to 80 km/h after the installation of roller bearings. These technical modifications made the SSt125 a reliable heavy-duty transporter for many decades.
The Brawa model of the SSt125 "RWE" heavy goods wagon impresses with its precise realization. The four bogies with a total of 18 axles, the multi-part truss carrying beaks and the true-to-original vehicle frame make this model a real eye-catcher. The car can be used both with and without a transformer, allowing different loading scenarios to be depicted.
The close-coupling kinematics in accordance with the NEM standard ensure smooth operation, and the precise detailing, including the platform railing and the extra brake systems, give the model its high level of authenticity. The mobility of the transformer, which swings in sharply on curves, makes operation on the model railway layout particularly realistic.
The model of the SSt125 "RWE" is ideally suited for use in historical freight trains of Era III that are specialized for heavy haulage. This wagon is particularly indispensable on long routes or in special scenarios that represent exceptional transports.
The SSt125 "RWE" heavy goods wagon is more than just a model - it is a piece of history. The detailed replica and the many possible uses make it the ideal choice for collectors and model railroaders who are looking for something special. Give your model railroad layout an extraordinary highlight with this masterpiece from Brawa.
