The model reflects the development of UIC standard freight cars. In 1949, the International Union of Railways (UIC) established its own research and development institute, the ORE, thereby laying an important foundation for freight cars suitable for international use. On this basis, European railway administrations developed their own car types for cross-border freight traffic.
The Deutsche Bundesbahn adopted these new standard freight cars early on and, starting in 1957, put the first true UIC-standard cars—the Gmm(e)hs 56—into service. Several retrofit programs later resulted in the creation of car types such as the Gmms 44, Gmm(eh)s 60, Gmms 40, and 216, among others.
