Are you looking for an exceptional tank car with a historical technical background? The Brawa 58223 Zzh tank car from the Deutsche Reichsbahn is an exquisitely detailed model of a 6-axle special-purpose car designed for transporting acids—ideal for anyone looking to enhance their Era IV layout with authentic rolling stock.
The model impresses with finely engraved bogies, separately attached axle brake linkages, separately attached spring assemblies, and a freestanding brake system. The brake shoes are precisely positioned in line with the wheels. Additionally, the car features close-coupling kinematics for realistic train formations and a length over buffers of 155 mm—perfectly tailored to H0 standards.
The prototype dates from the early 1940s and was manufactured, among others, by the H. Fuchs railcar factory in Heidelberg. Thanks to its low axle load, the 6-axle design allowed for loaded operation even on less well-developed tracks. The tank cars were used to transport acid and could only be filled and emptied from the top, as bottom valves were not permitted for safety reasons.
The tank consisted of ten welded panels, was insulated to a thickness of 40 mm, and was equipped with a heating system. These cars were used primarily by the chemical industry, often as privately owned cars registered with the DR. The car shown here, with the road number 27 50 087 3014-3 [P], exemplifies this use during Era IV—the period of modern DR operations following the railway reform in the GDR.
Whether as a single car or part of a tank car train—the Brawa 58223 fits perfectly into the switching yards, transfer stations, chemical plants, and industrial facilities on your layout. Its striking 6-axle design and fine details make it an eye-catcher in any train formation.
The Brawa Zzh tank car is not only a specialist for transporting acids but also a high-quality collector’s model with historical significance—ideal for model railroaders with an appreciation for technology and history.
