Then the Brawa 58272 H0 Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) Bm 235 Express Train Car is an excellent choice. This model epitomizes the high-quality InterCity service of the 1980s and 1990s and, with its ocean blue and beige color scheme and numerous detail enhancements, brings genuine railroad charm to your model railroad layout. With technical features such as disc-braked wheel sets, spring-loaded couplers, and the option to retrofit interior lighting, this car is designed for model railroading enthusiasts who place special value on realism and accuracy to the prototype.
The express train car is built to scale for H0 gauge (scale 1:87) and has a length over buffers of 303 mm. It is designed for use in a 2-wire direct current (DC) system. As an Era V model, it features typical characteristics of rail transport from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. The interior design is also era-appropriate and underscores the model’s realistic overall appearance. Thanks to a NEM-compliant coupler housing with close-coupling kinematics, the car can be easily integrated into existing train sets.
The design of this model impressively demonstrates the great importance Brawa places on precision and quality. In addition to the scale-accurate window layout, the car features separately attached steps and handrails, which significantly enhance its visual appeal. The generator is separately mounted on the bogie, adding to the model’s realism. The transition between the cars also features a spring-loaded rubber bead—a detail that not only looks authentic but also ensures smooth movement on tight curves. The car roofs are depicted as butt-welded, which corresponds to the design of the prototype.
The model is designed for a two-wire DC system and is not digitally compatible. However, it is prepared for retrofitting interior lighting, so the car looks its best even in dimly lit model railroad environments. Thanks to the use of disc-braked 093-type wheel sets and close-coupling kinematics, the model can be used smoothly and stably even in long train formations. Of particular note is its compatibility with the electric coupler from the BRAWA lineup, which opens up additional play possibilities.
In the late 1970s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn focused on improving the frequency and availability of long-distance trains with the InterCity ’79 program. The Bm 235 played a central role in this effort. Originally derived from Bm 234-class cars, these were adapted for high-speed InterCity service—among other things, through the installation of disc and magnetic track brakes, as well as the use of the new 093-class wheel sets. A total of 721 cars of this type were manufactured, which entered service in 1979, initially in an ocean blue and beige color scheme. In the 1990s, they also served as additional cars in InterRegio service and, over time, were repainted in various schemes—including the modern ICE design.
With its NEM-standard coupler and integrated close-coupling mechanism, the car can be easily integrated into existing H0 layouts. It is particularly well-suited for model railroaders who wish to recreate Era V train sets. The car can be combined with other Bm 235 models as well as with typical Deutsche Bundesbahn locomotives. Thanks to its interior lighting preparation, it is also ideal for layouts with nighttime operation or storefront displays.
