Brawa 70118 H0 steam locomotive 44 0101-4, DR, Ep.IV, DC-sound Product Details

Description

About the model: Brawa presents the model of the DR class 44 freight locomotive from Era IV. The model, which is true to the era, shines with its fine paintwork and detailed printing. In addition to numerous visual highlights, the locomotive also impresses with some technical features, such as a built-in sound decoder and functional interior lighting.

About the prototype: Similar to the German Federal Railroad in the West, the German State Railroad in the East of Germany was also constantly improving its vehicle fleet and making it more economical. As early as the beginning of the 1950s, a large number of class 44 locomotives were converted from grate to pulverized coal firing, which enabled up to 10 % higher boiler outputs. Even higher outputs were only possible with oil firing. The first tests were carried out on 44 195 on the Reichsbahn. After conversion to oil firing, the locomotive was sent to the testing facility in Halle and was extensively tested in operation. Confirmed by the good test results, the Reichsbahn ordered the conversion of a further 96 locomotives to oil main firing at the RAW Meiningen, which took place between 1963 and 1967. The 2'2' T34 oil tenders were given the distinctive, angular 13.5 m³ heavy oil tank and a closed rear wall to the driver's cab. The latter improved the working conditions in the driver's cabs, especially when reversing. As the DR only filled the oil tanks from above, there was no need for an external riser to bunker the fuel. The new firing system made the 44 Öl almost irreplaceable for the DR. Of the 102 BR 44 locomotives still in operational condition in 1974, 94 were oil-fired and were mainly distributed among the Eberswalde, Nordhausen, Saalfeld, Sangerhausen and Wittenberge depots. It was only the second oil crisis at the end of 1981 that led to the rather sudden retirement of the class 44.
