The ESU 31104 steam locomotive class 94 535 is a highly detailed reproduction of the legendary Prussian freight train tender locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) from Era II. This locomotive, which was developed as the T16.1 for demanding operations on steep lines, is true to the original down to the smallest detail and is brought to life with the latest technology and authentic functions such as locomotive sound, synchronized cylinder steam and elaborate lighting. With its universal operation for direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC), it fits into any H0 layout and sets new standards for the use of museum and shunting locomotives in model railway operation.
The class 94, known as the T16.1, was designed as a powerful tender locomotive for steep line and shunting service. Its origins date back to 1905, when the Prussian railroad administration needed a locomotive for the demanding lines in Thuringia. Designed by Robert Garbe, over 1,000 of these locomotives were built by 1924. With its high tractive power, robust construction and a speed of up to 60 km/h, it was ideal for branch lines and freight traffic. With its durable design and the Riggenbach back-pressure brake, the T16.1 was one of the most versatile and longest-running steam locomotives in German railroad operation.
The ESU 31104 BR 94 535 offers state-of-the-art technology that makes the model look as authentic as possible. The powerful bell-shaped armature motor with flywheel mass ensures smooth running characteristics. The high-quality LokSound V4.0 M4 decoder offers realistic sound effects that perfectly capture the operation of this historic locomotive. The cylinder steam is emitted in synchronization with the running sound and the axles, providing an extremely realistic driving experience. A PowerPack storage capacitor ensures an uninterrupted power supply and prevents power interruptions even in the event of brief contact losses.
With its universal electronics, the BR 94 535 is designed for use on both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems. The model can be switched between the two operating systems by simply moving a switch in the locomotive floor and removing or attaching the slider. The ESU LokSound decoder supports DCC, Motorola®, M4 and Selectrix®, allowing the locomotive to register independently with corresponding DCC and Märklin® mfx command stations.
The model has numerous lighting functions, including front lighting in white and red, cab lighting, firebox lighting and shunting lighting. These are perfectly represented by warm LEDs. When driving downhill, a function button can be used to switch to the background noise of the Riggenbach back-pressure brake, which further enhances the authenticity of the model. Numerous details such as free-standing handlebars, filigree spoked wheels and separately applied brass and plastic parts make the model a high-quality collector's item.
The ESU 31104 BR 94 535 is an authentic and detailed replica of a Prussian steam locomotive that impresses with its universal operation on DC and AC systems, the realistic sound and steam functions and the high quality of workmanship. With its robust construction, comprehensive functions and flexible use, this locomotive is a real highlight for any H0 layout and brings a piece of railroad history from Era II into the model railroad era.
