The ESU 31180 steam locomotive 78 443 is a precise model of the legendary class 78 that brings the technology and design of the 1920s to any model railway layout. This steam locomotive was used by the German Federal Railroad (DB) in Era III and is now a coveted collector's item that combines nostalgic charm and state-of-the-art technology. The H0 model impresses with a variety of digital functions, such as cylinder steam, realistic locomotive sound and versatile lighting options. With the option of switching between direct current and alternating current operation, the 78 443 is a versatile and detailed model that meets the highest demands.
The 78 series, known as the Prussian T18, was manufactured by the Vulcan locomotive factory in Stettin and later by Henschel, Hanomag and Franco-Belge. Between 1912 and 1927, 544 units of this powerful tank locomotive were built. The locomotive was developed for the transportation of passenger trains and proved itself through its high tractive power and speed performance. Originally designed for the island of Rügen and the Mainz area, the T18 was soon used throughout Germany and was also used in France, Poland and Belgium after the Second World War. The steam locomotive impressed with its power of 1140 HP and a speed of up to 90 km/h, making it one of the most successful models of its time.
The ESU 31180 steam locomotive 78 443 shines with a multitude of technical refinements and a high level of attention to detail. The powerful bell-type armature motor with flywheel mass ensures smooth and even running. The model is equipped with a sensor-controlled double smoke generator that emits steam in sync with the LokSound and makes the driving experience particularly authentic. The metal frame and chassis give the model stability and make it durable. A special highlight is the digital, remote-controlled coupling system, which allows flexible combination with other wagons.
The integrated LokSound 5 decoder offers a variety of sound and light functions that maximize the driving experience. The decoder supports DCC, Motorola®, M4 and Selectrix® and can register independently with Märklin® mfx command stations. Thanks to RailComPlus®, logging on to DCC command stations also works automatically. The realistic sound is amplified by the double loudspeaker with large sound capsule, which faithfully reproduces the historical sounds of the steam locomotive. The cylinder steam function can be set individually and reproduces the feeling of a real steam locomotive.
Thanks to the universal DC/AC electronics, the ESU 31180 steam locomotive can be used on both direct current and alternating current systems. Switching between the current systems is done simply by removing or attaching the slider and by changing a switch in the locomotive floor. This flexibility makes the locomotive a versatile addition to any H0 layout and allows model railroaders to use it in different operating environments.
The model offers a variety of lighting options based on the prototype. The LED lighting changes between white and red depending on the direction of travel, while additional running gear and driver's cab lighting provide an atmospheric appearance at night. The locomotive is equipped with high-quality metal wheels, spring-loaded buffers and etched signs, which are included for self-assembly. These small details lend the model maximum authenticity and make it the perfect eye-catcher on any model railway layout.
The ESU 31180 steam locomotive 78 443 is a must for anyone looking for a technically high-quality and detailed locomotive. The model combines cylinder steam, digital sound and versatile lighting functions to create an all-round realistic experience. Thanks to its DC/AC flexibility and ease of operation, this locomotive is suitable for all model railroaders who want to add an exclusive piece of railroad history to their collection.
