With the ESU diesel locomotive Post Lok 5, ESU offers a detailed replica of a shunting locomotive from Era IV, which was specially developed for the needs of the Deutsche Bundesbahn shunting service. In the 1950s, the German Federal Railroad planned a comprehensive modernization of its shunting operations. The solution was to procure powerful three-axle shunting locomotives with blind shafts and coupling rod drive. With a maximum speed of 60 km/h, the locomotives could be used flexibly on branch lines and in shunting operations. Originally, the Post Lok 5 was equipped with a coal-fired holding furnace (Dofa furnace), which was later replaced by an electrically operated holding system.
In the course of modernization, many of these locomotives were equipped with automatic couplings from the 1980s onwards and the original holding systems were replaced by more advanced technologies. A distinction was made between the light and heavy versions, with the heavy locomotives (54 t) having a reinforced frame, while the lighter versions (48 t) were built less robustly. These machines proved to be reliable workhorses in marshalling yards and industrial operations.
The ESU 31423 Post Lok 5 offers a high level of detail and is made entirely of metal, which gives it realistic stability and weight. Openwork fan grilles in the front end and engraved light guides give the model an authentic appearance. Equipped with 31 special functions, numerous effects and sounds can be controlled, including brake sparks when braking and running gear lighting for additional safety when shunting in dark areas.
