ESU 31536 electric locomotive, 11447 Lausanne SBB, grün, Ep. IV, Sound+Pantho, DC/AC Product Details

Description

After the Second World War, the famous Crocodiles or other older types continued to dominate the Swiss Gotthard line. In order to take account of the increased train weights and the desire for higher speeds, the Swiss Federal Railways SBB commissioned the development of a bogie locomotive without a running axle. Technically, this was to be based on the successful Ae 4/4 of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway BLS. SLM and BBC were in charge and handed over the pre-series locomotives Ae 6/6 11401 and 11402 to the SBB in 1952. The six drive motors of all Ae 6/6s produced 4300 kW and accelerated the locomotives to 125 km/h. The internationally proven BBC spring drive was chosen for propulsion. As the new pride of the Swiss railroads, the locomotives were fitted with all-round chrome strips, on the front sides to the left and right of the Swiss cross with shorter, outwardly beveled chrome strips, called "Schnauz" by the Swiss. The series locomotives differed significantly from the pre-series locomotives due to the modified roof equipment with a new main switch and the omission of the doors next to the driver's cab. As the locomotive body began to rust under the chrome strips after a few years, the SBB ordered the Ae 6/6 without chrome decoration from 1959, starting with number 11427. In the 1980s, many locomotives were painted red, in the 1990s the driver's cabs were redesigned, and from 2003 the driver's cabs of the locomotives intended for further use were modified to a greater extent, whereby, for example, the windscreen wiper drives previously fitted above the front windows were moved downwards. The most striking external change, however, was the repainting of some modernized locomotives in red/blue with large SBB Cargo lettering. By 2013, all Ae 6/6 locomotives not intended for museum preservation had been decommissioned.
