The ESU 31653 H0 steam locomotive 80 009 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) brings the impressive history of the robust three-coupled locomotives directly to your model railway layout. This locomotive is an example of the class 80, which was developed in 1928 and 1929 as part of the DRG's standard locomotive program. The machines, known as "Bulli", were specially designed for heavy shunting service with their powerful boiler and three-axle construction. They impressed with their strength and efficiency, especially in comparison to older Länderbahn locomotives.
The class 80 locomotives were preferably used in shunting yards in large cities and in industrial areas, where their compact design and maximum axle load of 17.5 tons could be optimally utilized. Even though only 39 units were built, they shaped the image of German shunting tracks for decades. The ESU 31653 reproduces the 80 009 locomotive with great attention to detail, which was the only state railway locomotive in the GDR to be sold to a private individual. Klaus Hollenbach, a locomotive driver with a passion, acquired the locomotive in 1981, transferred it on his own axle and set it up on a specially constructed siding on his private property.
The model realization of this special locomotive impresses with its authentic reproduction and attention to detail. Whether as a highlight on the layout or as a collector's item in the display case - the class 80 009 is a unique piece of railroad history. Thanks to modern digital technology, sensitive sound reproduction and functional equipment, operation is a real experience. The sensor-controlled smoke emission with cylinder steam, the powerful soundscape and the digitally remote-controlled couplings provide a prototypical operating atmosphere.
With this locomotive, you are getting a technically sophisticated and historically significant model on your layout. The ESU 31653 is suitable for collectors, ambitious model railroaders and anyone who wants to experience the flair of past railroad eras in perfection. The locomotive runs reliably on a minimum radius of 360 mm and offers flexibility in layout operation with universal DC/AC electronics.
