With the DB-V60, ESU is presenting a completely new model! Chassis, body, motor, transmission, pick-up shoe, smoke set, lighting, digital coupler, loudspeakers and all details have been newly developed. The lamp inserts have vertical engravings to give the impression of DB unit lanterns.
The conversion from AC (factory setting) to DC operation is done by removing the center slider and switching a small slide switch directly in front of the front axle. The digitally remote-controlled electromagnetic clutch sits in a standard shaft, is height-adjustable in two stages and can be easily exchanged or replaced by any other clutch without soldering thanks to the plug. The newly designed smoke generator produces a higher steam output.
The LokSound 5 decoder is completely new. Silky driving characteristics and a range of useful functions and setting options will delight the operating railroader. For example, there is a "heavy train" function, which doubles the acceleration and braking time and the motor operates acoustically at a higher speed. With the "locomotive brake", the locomotive goes into neutral and brakes a little harder - to a standstill if required - regardless of the speed controller setting. In shunting operation, the locomotive accelerates and decelerates more than in normal operation.
In the 1950s, Deutsche Bundesbahn DB planned to procure a large number of three-axle shunting locomotives in order to modernize the shunting service. The decision was made in favor of a drive with coupling rods and a blind shaft. With a maximum speed of 60 km/h in mainline operation, the locomotive was just as fast as the through freight trains that were common at the time and made full use of the permitted speed on branch lines. The coal-fired holding furnace (Dofa furnace) was only used to keep the parked V60s warm. From the 1990s onwards, DB replaced the ovens with externally powered heaters, which meant that the ovens at the front end below the right-hand circulation were no longer required. Other external changes included the installation of induction magnets from the mid-1960s and the fitting of automatic couplers to the majority of locomotives from 1985. Within DB, the series locomotives are divided into light and heavy locomotives. Externally, there is no difference between the two types. The heavy version, which weighed 54 tons, had a more heavily dimensioned frame than the light locomotives, which weighed only 48 tons. With the introduction of computerized designations in 1968, the light locomotives were given the series number 260, while the heavy locomotives were listed as 261. Until the early 1980s, the locomotives of both series had to be manned by staff trained as train drivers. In 1987, the DB reclassified the locomotives to the 360 and 361 series, assigning them to the small locomotives and creating the job title of locomotive shunting driver for the shunters trained as locomotive staff. The machines equipped with automatic coupling (AK) and radio remote control were given the designations 364 (light design) and 365 (heavy design). The class 362 and 363 were not built until 1992 and designate locomotives that were equipped with the Caterpillar engine 3412 DI-TA instead of the original Maybach GTO 6 / GTO 6A.
