Description

ESU 31760 H0 Diesel locomotive V100, V100 201, DR, Ep. III, DC+AC with sound

The ESU 31760 represents the V100 201 diesel locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and shows an early representative of the V100 series in the authentic appearance of Era III. The model is designed for the H0 gauge, painted in classic old red and represents the prototype condition around the year 1969. This locomotive thus represents the transition phase from the original V100 designation to the later EDV 110 series.

The development of the V100 began in the early 1960s after the Deutsche Reichsbahn realized that a powerful mainline locomotive was missing between the shunting locomotives of the V60 series and the heavy mainline diesel locomotives of the V180. The V100 was developed by VEB Lokomotivbau "Karl Marx" in cooperation with Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler". The aim was to adopt as many components as possible from the already proven locomotive types. The type designation V100 stood for an output of around 1000 HP.

The V100 in Era III

The first three pre-series locomotives were delivered in 1965 and initially had 900 hp twelve-cylinder engines of type 12 KVD 18/21. With a maximum speed of 100 km/h, they were intended for passenger and freight services on branch lines and main lines. After successful trials, series production began as early as 1966. A total of 869 locomotives were built in several series, making the V100 the DR's most frequently built mainline diesel locomotive.

The V100 201 locomotive is an example of this early period of use. In its old red livery, it could be found in front of passenger trains as well as in freight and transfer service and characterized the image of the beginning of diesel traction on the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III.

Prototypical implementation and the finest details

ESU has attached great importance to an exact reproduction of the technical and visual features in the conversion of the early V100. The two separately controlled traction motor fans in the original are also driven independently of each other in the model. The work of the fan wheels can be observed through the filigree, multi-part fan grilles, acoustically supported by the appropriate sound functions.

The running gear is particularly detailed with deeply engraved bogie covers, real springs and differently designed areas underneath the frame. These fine details impressively demonstrate the design differences within the locomotive family and ensure a very realistic overall impression.

High-end technology and sound from ESU

The model is equipped with a LokSound 5 decoder and supports DCC, Motorola®, M4 and Selectrix. Thanks to universal electronics with plug-in slider and slide switch, both two-wire and center conductor operation is possible. Independent log-on to control centers with RailComPlus® or mfx® significantly increases operating convenience.

A powerful bell-type armature motor with flywheel mass drives all four axles via cardan and worm gears, supported by two traction tires. A PowerPack storage capacitor ensures an uninterrupted power supply. The high-quality loudspeaker with large sound capsule and passive radiator delivers a powerful and clear sound from the faithfully digitized 12 KVD 18/21 diesel engine.

Smoke, light and additional functions

A switchable smoke generator with synchronized smoke emission enhances the realistic impression. Extensive lighting functions such as light changes depending on the direction of travel, headlights that can be switched off, cab and driver's desk lighting as well as typical reflectors on the lower headlights are prototypically implemented. Additional effects such as brake sparks and squealing noises when cornering slowly round off the functional package.

Digital couplers at both ends, spring-loaded buffers and numerous separately applied grab rails and partially openwork steps are also included. The magnetically held roof of the driver's cab is removable and provides a view of the finely detailed, multi-colored interior with driver figure.

Use in H0 gauge

With a minimum passable radius of 360 mm, the locomotive is also suitable for more compact layouts. It is ideal for passenger, freight and transfer services of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III and is impressive both in prototypical operation and as a high-quality collector's model.

The ESU 31760 combines the latest digital technology with an extremely detailed realization of the early DR-V100 and is therefore an excellent choice for demanding model railroaders with a focus on Era III.
