The ESU 31764 represents the diesel locomotive 111 002 of the Leipziger Dampf KulTour (LDK) and shows one of the best-known German mainline diesel locomotives in its current Era VI service. The model is designed for H0 gauge, has an eye-catching orange paint scheme and reproduces the prototypical condition around the year 2024. Due to its technical equipment and the consistently prototypical implementation, this locomotive is one of the most extensively equipped models in the current ESU program.
The locomotive is based on the legendary V100 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which was developed from the 1960s to close the gap between the V60 and V180 series. With a total of 869 units built, it was the DR's most frequently built mainline diesel locomotive. The V100.3 substructure series shown here, later known as the 111 series, was designed for heavy shunting service and has a reduced maximum speed. Locomotive 111 002 was delivered to the former Czechoslovakia in 1981 and is now used by LDK in shunting and construction train service.
One of the characteristic features of this locomotive is the massive horizontal rail scraper with warning paint, which indicates its origin outside the DR stock. ESU has implemented this and many other details exactly. These include the typical differences in the running gear, the adapted driving dynamics of the slower class 111 and the numerous external details that characterize this locomotive family.
The design of the model is also closely based on the prototype. As with the original, the two traction motor fans in the long front end are controlled independently of each other. The motor-driven fan wheels can be observed through the multi-part, etched fan grilles, which is additionally supported by the matching sound functions.
The model has a LokSound 5 decoder and is suitable for DCC, Motorola®, M4 and Selectrix. Thanks to universal electronics with plug-in slider and slide switch, the locomotive can be used in both two-wire and center-wire operation. The independent registration to central units with RailComPlus® or mfx® ensures a high level of operating convenience.
The powerful bell-shaped armature motor with flywheel drives all four axles via cardan/worm gears, supported by two traction tires. A PowerPack storage capacitor ensures an uninterrupted power supply. The high-quality loudspeaker with large sound capsule and passive radiator provides a particularly voluminous and clear sound of the faithfully digitized diesel engine 12 KVD 18/21.
A switchable smoke generator with synchronized smoke emission further enhances the realistic impression. Numerous light functions such as light change depending on the direction of travel, separately switchable headlights, cab and driver's desk lighting as well as typical reflectors of the lower headlights are implemented in a prototypical manner. Further effects such as brake sparks, squealing noises when cornering slowly and situation-dependent fan noises round off the functional package.
The locomotive has digitally switchable couplings at both ends, spring-loaded buffers and numerous separately applied accessories. The magnetically held roof of the driver's cab can be removed, allowing the finely detailed, multi-colored interior with driver figure to be viewed or further equipped.
With a minimum passable radius of 360 mm, the locomotive is also suitable for more compact layouts. It is ideal for modern shunting, construction train and industrial applications in Era VI and can be used flexibly on different layout concepts thanks to the DC/AC version.
The ESU 31764 combines the latest digital technology with an extremely detailed prototype implementation and is therefore an outstanding choice for demanding model railroaders who value technology, appearance and authentic operation.
