The ESU 36602 H0 Container Car Sgmmns, D-AAEC, Ep. VI is designed exactly for this purpose. The prototype for this car arose from a very specific need. To transport heavy bulk-cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required high-performance four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units were only partially suitable for this purpose, as the center loading position would have remained unused when loaded with spoil skips.
For this reason, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a usable length of 40 feet. These cars could be used flexibly and, depending on the need, could accommodate either a 40-foot or 30-foot container or two 20-foot containers. The new cars were initially used for construction site logistics related to the Stuttgart 21 project. Trains transported the excavated material to destinations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This area of operation makes the car an exciting example of modern freight transport.
Thanks to its design, the container car offers a wide range of loading options. Depending on the layout, the car can be equipped with either elaborately printed and highly detailed skips or with containers. This flexibility ensures that new and varied train formations can be put together time and again. Especially in modern freight transport, such versatile application possibilities are an important component for creating a realistic overall picture on the layout.
The model is built in H0 scale and is classified as Era VI. With a length over the buffers of 156.4 mm, the car has a compact yet striking appearance in a train formation. The metal body ensures a sturdy construction and underscores the high-quality overall impression. Separately attached handrails and running boards further contribute to a three-dimensional and highly detailed representation.
The close-coupling mechanism with a standard coupling box allows for seamless integration into modern freight trains. A minimum operating radius of 360 mm is required. Of particular interest are the included container pins, which can be used in both the open and folded-down positions. This allows the car to be flexibly adapted to various loading situations.
Another highlight is the containers themselves, which feature doors that open and have been elaborately printed in multiple colors. These details ensure that the car looks impressive not only in motion but also upon close inspection. The ability to load the car with different container variants or skips makes it a versatile addition to any modern freight train set.
