The prototype for this car arose from the need to efficiently transport heavy bulk cargo containers. The freight car leasing company AAE, which is now part of VTG, required four-axle container cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons for this purpose. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units were only partially suitable for this purpose, as the center loading position would have had to remain clear when loading with spoil skips. Therefore, it was decided to shorten the existing cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a 40-foot useful length.
These cars offer a high degree of operational flexibility and can accommodate either a 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. They were first deployed in construction site logistics around the Stuttgart 21 project, where they were used to transport excavated material to destinations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This wagon type is thus a prime example of modern transport chains and current infrastructure projects.
A particular advantage of this container car lies in its variable loading configuration. The model can be equipped with either detailed dump bodies or containers. This version includes containers with the markings MSKU and HLXU, which give the car a particularly realistic appearance.
