The prototype for this car arose from a specific need in rail freight transport. The freight car leasing company AAE, which is now part of VTG, required four-axle container-carrying cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons for transporting heavy bulk cargo containers. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60-type cars were not ideally suited for this purpose, as the center loading position would have had to remain free when loading with dump cars. For this reason, it was decided to shorten the existing cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a 40-foot usable length.
This design allows for flexible use in operation. The cars can accommodate either a 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. They were initially used in construction site logistics for the Stuttgart 21 project. The trains transported the spoil to Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt, among other destinations. As such, this car type exemplifies modern transport chains and current infrastructure projects in rail transport.
A particular advantage of this container car lies in its versatile loading capabilities. The model can be equipped with either detailed open-top containers or standard containers. This version includes containers with the markings MSKU and MSDU, which give the car a particularly realistic appearance. This flexibility allows for varied train formations and ensures an authentic look in modern freight transport.
The car is built to H0 scale and is classified as Era VI. With a length over buffers of 156.4 mm, it is the perfect size for use in modern freight trains. The metal body ensures a robust and high-quality construction. The close-coupling mechanism with standard coupling socket facilitates seamless integration into the train consist and ensures a prototypical appearance during operation.
The details are also impressive: separately attached handrails and foot steps contribute to a lifelike representation. The included container pins can be displayed in both the open and folded-down positions, allowing for various loading scenarios. The minimum negotiable radius of 360 mm also enables seamless integration into many layout designs.
The included containers feature intricate multicolor printing and have doors that open. These details create a particularly realistic effect, both during operation and when on display.
