The freight car leasing company AAE, which is now part of VTG, required four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons for transporting heavy bulk cargo containers. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60 cars were not ideally suited for this purpose, as the center loading position would have had to remain clear when loading with spoil skips. Therefore, it was decided to shorten the existing cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a usable length of 40 feet.
This design allows for flexible use in operation. The railcars can accommodate either a 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. They were initially deployed in construction site logistics for the Stuttgart 21 project, where they were used to transport excavated material to destinations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. As such, this type of car exemplifies modern transport chains and current infrastructure projects in rail transport.
A particular advantage of this container car lies in its variable loading capacity. The model can be equipped with either detailed open-top bodies or containers. This version includes containers marked KKLU and MEDU, which ensure a particularly realistic appearance.
