The prototype for this car arose from a specific need in modern rail freight transport. To transport heavy bulk cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. With the existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units in the fleet, the center loading position would have had to remain unoccupied when loading with spoil skips. Therefore, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 units and return them to service as Sgmmns 173 with a useful length of only 40 feet.
The four-axle cars can each carry one 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. This resulted in a particularly flexible car design for a variety of transport tasks. The new cars were initially used in construction site logistics around the Stuttgart 21 project. Trains transported the excavated material to locations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This area of application clearly demonstrates how closely the car is linked to modern large-scale projects and current logistics.
A particular appeal of this container car lies in its versatile loading capabilities. The model can be equipped with either elaborately printed, highly detailed dump bodies or with containers. In this version, the CSNU and HLXU containers provide a striking and contemporary look. This allows the car to be integrated in a variety of ways into different freight trains and ensures a realistic overall appearance in modern layout operations.
The model is built in H0 scale and is classified as Era VI. The metal body underscores the car’s high-quality character and ensures a solid construction. With a length over buffers of 156.4 mm, the car is a suitable size for use in current freight trains. The minimum operating radius of 360 mm also allows for versatile use on many H0 layouts.
The model also impresses in its details with a clean and prototypical design. The close-coupling mechanism with standard coupling shaft ensures seamless integration into the train consist. Separately attached handrails and steps lend the car additional realism. Container pins in both open and folded configurations are also included, expanding the possibilities for loading and display. The containers are equipped with doors that open and feature elaborate multicolor printing, making the car impressive not only in operation but also upon closer inspection.
