Would you like to recreate one of Germany’s most extraordinary regional trains on your N-gauge model railroad layout? With the Fleischmann 6260126 three-car passenger car set of the Munich-Nuremberg Express, you can bring a special piece of modern railroad history to your layout. The set consists of one 1st- and 2nd-class compartment car and two 2nd-class open-plan cars, and depicts the train as it operated in 2015.
The Munich-Nuremberg Express, or MNE for short, was a standout feature of German regional rail service for many years. Traveling at speeds of up to 200 km/h, these locomotive-hauled Regional-Express trains ran on the high-speed line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt, connecting the metropolitan areas of Munich and Nuremberg. The combination of powerful Class 101 electric locomotives and converted Intercity passenger cars made these trains particularly interesting.
The Fleischmann Era VI car set recreates this extraordinary train formation on a 1:160 scale. With its existing interior fittings, retrofittable interior lighting, and close-coupling mechanism, it is ideal for model railroading enthusiasts who wish to authentically recreate Deutsche Bahn’s modern regional rail service.
The Munich–Nuremberg Express ranks among the most remarkable concepts in German local passenger rail transport. On the Munich–Ingolstadt–Nuremberg route, Regional-Express services were offered that differed significantly from ordinary regional trains in terms of their technical specifications.
A distinctive feature was the use of the Nuremberg–Ingolstadt high-speed line. While many regional trains operate on conventional rail lines at significantly lower speeds, the Munich–Nuremberg Express reached a top speed of up to 200 km/h.
This made these trains among the fastest regional trains in Germany. They were also unique because they ran entirely on a newly built German high-speed line.
For this demanding service, former Deutsche Bahn Intercity passenger cars were modified and paired with powerful Class 101 electric locomotives.
The result was an unusual Regional-Express train that combined the technical capabilities of long-distance service with the requirements of regional passenger transport.
The Fleischmann 6260126 car set consists of three passenger cars from the Munich–Nuremberg Express in their 2015 configuration.
Included are a 1st- and 2nd-class compartment car, type ABvmsz, as well as two 2nd-class open-plan cars, type Bpmz.
This configuration provides an interesting basis for recreating a classic Munich–Nuremberg Express train from Era VI.
The cars feature the livery intended for DB Regio, thus evoking the special use of former Intercity vehicles in regional service.
Especially when paired with a traffic-red Class 101 electric locomotive, the result is a distinctive train configuration, just as it was seen on the route between Munich, Ingolstadt, and Nuremberg.
The first car in the Fleischmann set is an ABvmsz compartment car with sections for 1st and 2nd class.
This special car type was derived from converted former Intercity service cars of the Bvmsz type. For use on the Munich–Nuremberg Express, the cars were adapted to meet the requirements of regional rail service.
An interesting feature was the addition of first-class seating. Initially, these cars had twelve first-class seats. Over time, this number was increased to 16 seats.
To distinguish between the car classes, the relevant seats were given, among other things, a pink fabric upholstery.
The reclassification of the cars to the ABvmsz class highlighted their new function as mixed-class passenger cars.
With the Fleischmann model, you can recreate this unique car design on your N-gauge layout. The ABvmsz is an attractive addition, especially for railroad enthusiasts interested in unusual conversions and special passenger car concepts.
The ABvmsz is complemented by two 2nd-class high-capacity cars of the Bpmz class.
The Bpmz passenger cars are among the most distinctive high-capacity cars of Deutsche Bahn. Originally developed for high-quality long-distance service, they provided a suitable technical foundation for use on the fast Regional-Express route.
For the Munich–Nuremberg Express, corresponding Intercity cars were retrofitted and adapted to the new route.
The two Fleischmann Bpmz cars make up the typical seating section of the Regional-Express train and complement the mixed-class ABvmsz to form a harmonious three-car set.
By combining several compatible cars, a longer MNE set can be assembled, which looks particularly impressive on larger N-gauge model railroads with long platforms.
The passenger cars of the Munich-Nuremberg Express have an interesting history.
A total of 26 former Intercity cars were converted for this special transportation concept. Among them were three control cars that were intended for later use in reversible train sets.
The conversion work took place at the Neumünster rail depot. During this process, the cars were adapted for regional service and repainted in the colors of DB Regio.
The pressure-compensated design of the original cars was an important prerequisite for operation on the high-speed line. When traveling through tunnels and during high-speed train encounters, pressure fluctuations occur, and passenger cars are designed to withstand these conditions.
The use of these converted Intercity cars made the Munich–Nuremberg Express an extraordinary regional train, whose appearance differed significantly from that of ordinary commuter trains.
The Class 101 electric locomotives were particularly closely associated with the Munich–Nuremberg Express.
These powerful express train locomotives were originally developed for Deutsche Bahn’s high-quality long-distance service. With a top speed of 220 km/h, they were ideally suited for operating Regional-Express trains capable of speeds up to 200 km/h.
Until 2021, the Munich–Nuremberg Express fleet consisted of reversible train sets hauled by Class 101 electric locomotives.
A typical set usually consisted of six passenger cars. Additional train services were deployed for routes with particularly high demand.
During peak hours in the morning and afternoon, a ten-car train—hauled at both ends by a Class 101 electric locomotive—even ran between Munich and Ingolstadt at times.
This special train formation was a striking example of the high demands placed on regional rail service on this important Bavarian route.
All three passenger cars in the Fleischmann 6260126 set are equipped with interior furnishings.
This complements the prototypical design of the former Intercity cars and creates a harmonious overall impression when viewed through the windows.
For an even more realistic effect, the cars can be retrofitted with interior lighting. The Fleischmann interior lighting set (item number 944501) is intended for this purpose.
An illuminated Munich–Nuremberg Express set is particularly impressive during twilight runs, in nighttime station scenes, or when pulling into a lit main station.
The interior lighting is not included as standard equipment and can be added separately as needed.
Fleischmann passenger cars feature NEM 355 coupling shafts with close-coupling kinematics.
This feature allows for the use of compatible close-coupling couplers and ensures consistent car spacing within the train set.
With a total length over buffers of 495 mm, this three-car set already provides an attractive foundation for a modern Regional-Express train.
The cars are designed for N gauge at a scale of 1:160 and can be combined with other compatible passenger cars to form a longer Munich–Nuremberg Express set.
This creates a distinctive look, particularly on model railroads featuring long platforms, electrified main lines, and modern station buildings.
The Fleischmann 6260126 car set pairs perfectly with Class 101 electric locomotives.
The Fleischmann BR 101 139-4 in traffic red paint is a particularly good match. This electric locomotive is available under item number 7560106 as an analog DC version and under item number 7570106 as a digital sound version.
Together with the three MNE passenger cars, this creates an attractive train set that evokes the fast regional service between Munich, Ingolstadt, and Nuremberg.
With additional matching Munich-Nuremberg Express cars, the train set can be extended to more closely resemble the typical six-car sets found on the prototype.
A representation of the particularly impressive ten-car train, hauled on both ends by BR 101 locomotives, is also ideal for larger N-gauge layouts.
The Fleischmann Munich-Nuremberg Express set offers versatile options for creating modern railroad scenes.
It is particularly interesting when used on an electrified main line with long straightaways, modern signals, and generously sized stations.
With a matching Class 101 locomotive, for example, you can recreate the arrival of a Regional-Express train at a larger station. Other typical uses include a high-speed run along the line or positioning a train set at the platform.
The unique history of the former Intercity cars adds an extra layer of appeal to the model train. Instead of ordinary commuter cars, this set features passenger cars that were originally designed for long-distance travel.
It is precisely this difference that makes the Munich–Nuremberg Express an interesting addition to Era VI model railroad layouts.
For model railroaders focusing on Deutsche Bahn AG, the Munich-Nuremberg Express is one of the most interesting regional train concepts in recent railway history.
The Fleischmann 6260126 features the ABvmsz and the two Bpmz cars, representing three characteristic vehicles of this extraordinary route.
The design reflecting the 2015 operational condition, the authentic interior furnishings, and the option to retrofit interior lighting make this car set particularly attractive for prototype-oriented N-gauge model railroaders.
The set is also an interesting addition for collectors of modern passenger cars, as it documents the unusual combination of Intercity vehicle technology and regional rail service.
