Would you like to recreate the legendary Munich-Nuremberg Express as a prototypical reversible train on your N-gauge model railroad layout? With the Fleischmann 6270127 three-car passenger car set of the Munich-Nuremberg Express, you can bring an extraordinary Deutsche Bahn regional train to your layout. The set consists of a control car of the Bpmbdzf 286.3 class and two 2nd-class open-plan cars of the Bpmz class.
A special highlight is the factory-installed functional decoder in the control car. This enables the direction-dependent white-and-red light sequence in both analog and digital operation. All three passenger cars depict the 2015 service condition and feature interior fittings.
As Era VI models, the Fleischmann cars are a tribute to one of Germany’s most extraordinary regional trains. The Munich-Nuremberg Express connected the cities of Munich, Ingolstadt, and Nuremberg at speeds of up to 200 km/h, utilizing a modern high-speed rail line. The combination of former Intercity cars and powerful Class 101 electric locomotives made this Regional-Express a unique feature of German rail transport.
The Munich-Nuremberg Express, often referred to as the MNE, was one of Deutsche Bahn’s most remarkable regional train concepts. The Regional-Express line connected Munich to Nuremberg via Ingolstadt and utilized the modern high-speed line between Ingolstadt and Nuremberg.
With a top speed of up to 200 km/h, these trains differed significantly from ordinary regional trains and Regional-Express services.
Measured by its top speed, the Munich-Nuremberg Express was thus one of Germany’s fastest regional trains. Another unique feature was that the trains ran entirely on a newly built German high-speed line.
For this demanding operational concept, Deutsche Bahn required passenger cars that were also suitable for high-speed long-distance service. For this reason, former Intercity cars were converted for use as Regional-Express trains.
Powerful Class 101 electric locomotives, which had originally been developed for high-quality long-distance service, served as the train’s locomotives.
With the Fleischmann 6270127, you can recreate this special chapter of German railway history on a 1:160 scale.
The Fleischmann 6270127 car set consists of three characteristic passenger cars from the Munich–Nuremberg Express.
Included are a Bpmbdzf 286.3 control car and two 2nd-class open-plan cars of the Bpmz type.
All three cars are depicted in their 2015 operational condition, reflecting a particularly interesting phase in the history of the Munich–Nuremberg Express.
The livery in DB Regio colors highlights the unusual use of former Intercity passenger cars in high-speed regional service.
The combination of the control car and two high-capacity cars creates an attractive set of cars that can be perfectly complemented with other matching MNE passenger cars.
A special highlight of the Fleischmann 6270127 is the included Bpmbdzf 286.3 control car.
In the full-scale prototype, this car enabled reversible train operation. This meant the electric locomotive did not have to be moved to the other end of the train at the terminal station.
Instead, the engineer could operate the train in push mode from the control car’s cab. The locomotive remained at the other end of the train and continued to provide propulsion.
This operating concept was particularly advantageous for high-speed regional service between Munich, Ingolstadt, and Nuremberg. It enabled efficient operations and reduced the turnaround times required at the terminal stations.
The Fleischmann control car brings this distinctive operating mode to your N-gauge model railroad layout and, when paired with a matching BR 101, completes an attractive reversible train set.
The control car in the Fleischmann 6270127 set features a special technical design.
It has a factory-installed function decoder that controls the direction-dependent light changes.
When the control car is at the front of the train, the model displays a white three-light headlight. When the control car is at the rear of the train, two red tail lights are displayed.
The lighting is powered by LEDs and ensures a prototypical appearance during model railroad operation.
A particularly practical feature is its compatibility with both operating modes: The lighting changes work both in analog DC operation and on a suitable digital model railroad layout.
This allows the control car to be used flexibly and combined with a suitable electric locomotive to form a modern Regional-Express train.
The built-in function decoder controls the car lighting. The train is still powered by a separately operated locomotive.
The control car is complemented by two Bpmz-class high-capacity passenger cars.
These passenger cars were originally developed for high-quality Intercity service and provided a suitable technical foundation for use on high-speed lines.
For the Munich–Nuremberg Express, these cars were modified and adapted to the requirements of regional service.
The two Fleischmann Bpmz cars make up the seating section of the three-car set and, in combination with the control car, create a characteristic passenger train formation.
Particularly interesting is the possibility of combining the cars with other compatible Munich–Nuremberg Express vehicles. This allows the train to be extended step by step and to resemble the full-scale prototype even more closely.
The history of the Munich–Nuremberg Express is closely linked to Deutsche Bahn’s former Intercity passenger cars.
A total of 26 IC cars were converted for use on this special Regional-Express line. Among them were three control cars.
The conversion work took place at the Neumünster rail depot. The passenger cars were adapted to the requirements of high-speed regional service and received the characteristic color scheme of DB Regio.
An important prerequisite for operation on the high-speed line was the cars’ pressure-resistant modification. In the case of the larger prototype, this serves to limit the effects of pressure fluctuations during high-speed train travel, for example in tunnels or when trains pass each other.
The service cars of the Munich-Nuremberg Express also had an interesting feature. They were converted from Bvmsz-class cars and, following the conversion, were designated ABvmsz.
These cars were initially equipped with twelve first-class seats, later increased to 16. This resulted in an unusual blend of former long-distance equipment and a regional service concept.
The use of high-quality Intercity cars made the Munich-Nuremberg Express a distinctive regional train of Era VI.
A particularly distinctive feature of the Munich–Nuremberg Express was the use of Class 101 electric locomotives.
These powerful locomotives were originally developed for Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed long-distance service. With a top speed of 220 km/h, they were ideally suited for Regional-Express trains capable of speeds up to 200 km/h.
Until 2021, reversible train sets hauled by Class 101 electric locomotives were used on the Munich–Nuremberg Express line.
A typical set consisted of six passenger cars. During peak hours, additional train services were put into operation.
Particularly impressive was a ten-car train between Munich and Ingolstadt, which ran in the morning and afternoon with a BR 101 at each end of the train.
This extraordinary formation demonstrated the high passenger capacity required on this highly sought-after route.
With the Fleischmann 6270127, you can recreate the characteristic reversible train operation of the Munich-Nuremberg Express on your model railroad layout.
All three passenger cars in the Fleischmann 6270127 set are equipped with interior furnishings.
This complements the prototype-accurate design of the cars and creates a harmonious overall impression when viewed through the windows.
For an even more realistic effect, interior lighting can be retrofitted. The recommended lighting accessories are Fleischmann part numbers 945301 and 944501.
An illuminated Munich-Nuremberg Express set is particularly impressive during twilight runs, in nighttime station scenes, or when pulling into a lit main station.
The existing interior provides a suitable foundation for this and complements the factory-installed LED headlights and tail lights on the control car.
The interior lighting is not factory-installed but can be added separately.
The Fleischmann Munich–Nuremberg Express cars feature NEM 355 coupling shafts with close-coupling kinematics.
This feature allows for the use of suitable close-coupling couplers and ensures harmonious car spacing within the train set.
With a total length over buffers of 495 mm, this three-car set already provides an attractive foundation for a modern Regional-Express train.
The cars are designed for N gauge at a scale of 1:160 and can be combined with other compatible passenger cars to form a longer set.
This creates a distinctive train appearance, particularly on model railroads featuring modern stations, long platforms, and electrified main lines.
Combining this set with the Fleischmann 6260126 three-car Munich-Nuremberg Express Car Set #1 offers a particularly interesting expansion option.
This set includes a 1st- and 2nd-class compartment car, type ABvmsz, as well as two 2nd-class open-plan cars, type Bpmz.
When combined with the Fleischmann 6270127, it forms a complete six-car passenger train set in its 2015 operational configuration.
The formation then includes a Bpmbdzf 286.3 control car, a mixed-class ABvmsz compartment car, and four 2nd-class Bpmz open-plan cars.
The total length of the six cars is 990 mm over buffers. This allows you to recreate a particularly impressive Munich–Nuremberg Express set.
This six-car set really comes into its own on larger N-gauge layouts with long platforms and modern main lines.
The ideal locomotive for the Fleischmann 6270127 car set is a Deutsche Bahn Class 101 electric locomotive.
The Fleischmann Class 101 139-4 in traffic red paint is a particularly good match. This electric locomotive is available as an analog DC version under item number 7560106 and as a digital sound version under item number 7570106.
When combined with the control car and the two Bpmz high-capacity passenger cars, it forms an attractive reversible train set reminiscent of the fast regional service between Munich, Ingolstadt, and Nuremberg.
By combining it with the matching expansion set 6260126, the train can be extended to a six-car passenger train set.
Of particular interest is the direction-dependent lighting change on the control car. When operated accordingly, this allows you to recreate the typical lighting of a reversible train.
Combining it with a factory-equipped digital BR 101 locomotive also offers interesting possibilities for varied model railroad operation.
The Fleischmann 6270127 is ideal for model railroaders who want to recreate modern German regional rail service as authentically as possible.
The depiction of reversible train operation is particularly appealing. In this setup, the locomotive can remain at one end of the train, while the control car at the other end forms the characteristic front of the pushed train.
On a model railroad layout with a larger station, for example, you can depict the arrival of a Munich–Nuremberg Express. After passengers have boarded and alighted, the train set can continue its journey in the opposite direction.
High-speed runs on a modern electrified main line are also a perfect fit for the Munich–Nuremberg Express prototype.
The combination of a control car, former Intercity passenger cars, and a powerful Class 101 electric locomotive creates a particularly distinctive appearance.
For collectors and model railroaders focused on Deutsche Bahn AG, the Munich–Nuremberg Express ranks among the most extraordinary regional train concepts in recent railway history.
The Fleischmann 6270127 set features the Bpmbdzf 286.3 control car and the two Bpmz open-plan cars, recreating three characteristic vehicles from this special route.
The set’s 2015 operational configuration, the included interior furnishings, and the option to retrofit interior lighting make it particularly appealing to prototypical N-gauge model railroaders.
An additional highlight is the factory-installed function decoder in the control car, which enables the white-and-red light sequence to change in both analog and digital operation.
