The class 01 two-cylinder locomotives are considered to be the first express locomotives built according to the standardized construction program. The DR retained the original design with the large Wagner wind deflectors and the air and feed pumps in the smokebox niches after the Second World War. The DB, on the other hand, moved them to the middle of the vehicle over time and thus achieved a better view of the track. Almost at the same time, it replaced the large wind deflectors with those of the Witte type and changed most of the circulation plates.
The first construction lots were equipped with leading wheels with a diameter of 800 mm and approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102, leading wheels with a diameter of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, allowing the maximum permitted speed to be increased to 130 km/h.
Until 1939, the locomotives ran with the riveted tenders of type 2'2' T 32. After this time, the new deliveries received the welded tenders 2'2' T 34, the locomotives already in service were gradually retrofitted accordingly.
