Description

Fleischmann 7160029 N Steam Locomotive Class 01 168-4 DB Era IV

Are you looking for an impressive express steam locomotive for your N-gauge model railroad layout that authentically reflects the classic long-distance service of the Deutsche Bundesbahn during the final years of steam operation? The Fleischmann 7160029 DB Class 01 168-4 steam locomotive impresses with its characteristic design, Witte air deflectors, and prototypical details, including DB reflex lamps.

As an Era IV variant, the model depicts the express locomotive as it was in service in the early 1970s. With its enclosed front apron, the 2’2’ T 34 tender, and the unobstructed view between the boiler and the undercarriage, the BR 01 168-4 is an attractive addition for enthusiasts of classic Deutsche Bundesbahn express trains.

Fleischmann BR 01 168-4 – legendary Deutsche Bundesbahn express steam locomotive

The Class 01 is one of the most famous steam locomotives in German railway history. These powerful two-cylinder engines were developed as part of the Standard Locomotive Program and were specifically designed for high-quality express train service.

The first Class 01 locomotives were equipped with large Wagner air deflectors. Air and feed pumps were originally located in the smoke box niches. After World War II, the German Federal Railroad (Deutsche Bundesbahn) made various modifications to its locomotives to improve their operational characteristics and visibility for the locomotive crew.

These included relocating the pumps to the center of the locomotive, replacing the large Wagner air deflectors with smaller Witte air deflectors, and making modifications to the deflector plates.

The series also continued to evolve in terms of top speed. While the first production batches, equipped with 800-mm-diameter leading wheels, were certified for 120 km/h, larger leading wheels and reinforced brakes—starting with locomotive 01 102—enabled a top speed of 130 km/h.

Variant with Witte air deflectors and DB reflex lamps

The Fleischmann 7160029 depicts BR 01 168-4 in a characteristic configuration from its final years of service in the early 1970s. Particularly striking are the Witte air deflectors, the DB reflex lamps, and the enclosed front skirt.

Another interesting detail is the unobstructed view between the boiler and the undercarriage, which highlights the unique design of the express steam locomotive in the model.

The 2’2’ T 34 tender complements the locomotive’s appearance. This welded tender design was used on newly delivered locomotives starting in 1939, while older locomotives were gradually retrofitted accordingly.

This version allows you to recreate the atmosphere of the last great express steam locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn on your N-gauge layout in a particularly evocative way.

Analog Express Train Locomotive with Next18 Digital Interface

The Fleischmann 7160029 is designed for the analog DC system and features an electrical Next18 digital interface. This allows the model to be retrofitted with a compatible digital decoder if desired.

The locomotive is driven by two axles. Both axles are equipped with traction tires, which enhance the locomotive’s tractive force during model railroading.

The three-light headlight at both ends of the locomotive, which changes direction depending on the direction of travel, is equipped with LEDs and provides realistic lighting while the locomotive is in motion.

A close-coupling mechanism is located between the locomotive and the tender. The tender features a NEM 355 coupling shaft with close-coupling kinematics.

With a length over buffers of 150 mm and a minimum negotiable radius of 192 mm, this express train locomotive can also be used on more compact N-gauge model railroad layouts.

Ideal locomotive for classic Era IV express trains

The Fleischmann BR 01 168-4 pairs particularly well with contemporary passenger cars from the Deutsche Bundesbahn. This allows you to recreate the high-quality express train service of the early 1970s on your model railroad layout.

The Fleischmann Era IV converted cars, such as those with part numbers 6260116, 6260117, 6260118, and 6260119, make a perfect complement. Together, they allow you to create a variety of historic train formations.

Whether on a major main line, pulling into a long-distance station, or as an impressive locomotive leading a classic passenger train set—the BR 01 168-4 offers numerous possibilities for prototypical model railroad operation.

Bring a piece of German express train history to your model railroad layout! Get the Fleischmann 7160029 BR 01 168-4 from the Deutsche Bundesbahn and expand your N-gauge collection with a distinctive Era IV express train steam locomotive.
