Class 44 - the "Jumbo" of the German Reichsbahn

The class 44 was the backbone of the heavy freight train service on the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Many locomotives remaining after the war were converted to oil firing in order to increase performance. The 44 0104-8 locomotive was based at Saalfeld depot and was in service under Erfurt station until the 1980s. It was nicknamed "Jumbo" due to its tractive power.
